The arithmetic

  1. Pada length = 40.00 ÷ 9 = 4.44 ft
  2. Pada width = 30.00 ÷ 9 = 3.33 ft
  3. Central block spans 3 padas each way, so 3 × 4.44 = 13.33 ft and 3 × 3.33 = 10.00 ft

Irregular plots: take the bounding rectangle first, then mark the cut-outs separately. A missing corner changes which padas actually exist, which is the part most hand-drawn grids get wrong.

What the Vastu Purusha Mandala actually is

The mandala is a diagram, not a decoration. The legend, told in the Matsya Purana and repeated in the Vastu treatises, describes a formless being that grew until it blotted out the sky. The devatas pinned it face down to the earth, each holding a limb, and Brahma granted it a boon: it would be honoured as Vastu Purusha, the spirit of the site. The grid is the map of that pinned body. The devatas holding it down are the padas, the head lies in the north-east, the feet in the south-west, and the navel is the Brahmasthan at the centre.

Underneath the story is a working method: a proportional module, a consistent way to relate a building to the sun's path and the prevailing wind, and a fixed vocabulary so that one silpin's drawing means the same thing to another.

Padas: what one cell means on a real floor plan

A pada is one cell of the grid. On the 81-pada chart each pada is one-ninth of the length by one-ninth of the width, so on a 40 ft by 30 ft plot a pada is about 4.44 ft by 3.33 ft, and on a 1,200 sq ft flat it is roughly 15 sq ft. That is small enough that a wardrobe sits in one pada and a bathroom in four, which is exactly the resolution you need to say something more precise than the kitchen is in the south-east.

Overlaid on a plan, a pada answers two practical questions: which zone does this room mostly sit in, and is the heavy mass of the building landing where the grid wants weight, the south and west, or where it wants openness, the north, the east and the centre. Rooms rarely fall neatly inside one zone, so you judge by where most of the floor area and the heaviest fittings land.

The Brahmasthan, and what to do when your flat ignores it

The centre belongs to Brahma, and classical practice keeps it open to the sky where possible. That is why courtyard houses across India, the nadumuttam in Kerala, the chowk in the north, put a void exactly there. Discouraged in the Brahmasthan: toilets and drains, a staircase, a heavy column or beam junction, an underground tank or sump, a fixed heavy almirah, and long-term storage. The reasoning is that the centre is the point through which the plan breathes, so loading or fouling it disturbs everything arranged around it.

Now the honest part. In a typical Indian apartment you have no say in this. A plumbing shaft, a column or the common staircase was routed through the middle of the slab long before you saw the plan, and no amount of Vastu will move a column. Cutting a beam is not a remedy, it is a structural risk and usually illegal without approval.

What people do instead: keep the central padas as free of furniture and stored goods as the layout allows, clean, dry and well lit. If a bathroom occupies the centre, keep it dry, keep the door shut and do not store things in it. Then rebalance where you do have control, the south-west mass, the entrance, the kitchen position. The four corners carry the four gross elements and the centre carries akasha; the cardinal directions are described more often by their lord and their function than by a single element, and sources differ on the cardinal assignments.

How to draw a Vastu grid on your own floor plan

  1. Square off the outline. Draw the smallest rectangle enclosing the plan. Open cantilevered balconies are usually left out; enclosed ones are counted.
  2. Get a real bearing first. A grid rotated by fifteen degrees gives you fifteen degrees of wrong answers. Take the reading away from steel and electronics, and use magnetic-to-true correction. Our Vastu compass guide covers how to do this properly.
  3. Divide each axis into nine. Mark the eight intermediate points on each side and join them. You now have 81 padas. Use eight divisions for the Manduka chart.
  4. Rotate to north. Turn the sheet so true north points up, or draw the north arrow at its measured angle and read the zones along that arrow rather than along the paper edge.
  5. Read the rooms. Note the padas each room covers and the zone holding most of its area, then check what is sitting in the central block.

A note on which chart this is

There is no single authoritative Vastu chakra. Mayamata and Manasara describe the mandala family differently, list thirty-two designs from one pada upward, and disagree on how the interior padas are allotted; Brihat Samhita gives its own account. Modern systems, MahaVastu among them, re-describe the grid as sixteen zones with their own attributions rather than the classical devata scheme, so a MahaVastu grid will not match this one cell for cell, and that is expected rather than an error. What is drawn here is the widely published classical layout: thirty-two border devatas, the four great inner padas, the eight padas adjoining the centre, and Brahma at the middle. Corner attributions vary in particular, and some charts place Vayu at the north-west pada shown here as Roga.

What is the Vastu grid?

The Vastu grid, or Vastu Purusha Mandala, is a square diagram divided into equal cells called padas, laid over a plot or floor plan once the north direction is fixed. Each pada carries a presiding devata and belongs to one of eight directional zones, so the grid turns a vague idea of "north-east corner" into a measurable position on a drawing.

What is the Brahmasthan?

The Brahmasthan is the central zone of the grid, presided over by Brahma. On the 9x9 Paramasayika chart it is the middle 3x3 block, that is nine of the eighty-one padas, or one-ninth of the plot area. On the 8x8 Manduka chart it is the central 2x2 block, four of sixty-four padas, or one-sixteenth of the area. Classically it is kept open, light and free of load.

9x9 or 8x8 - which Vastu grid do I use?

The 81-pada Paramasayika grid is the one most commonly applied to residential plots in published Vastu literature, and it is what most online Vastu chakra charts show. The 64-pada Manduka grid is classically associated with temples, towns and certain categories of dwelling. For a home floor plan the 9x9 is the safer default; the 8x8 is useful when your plan divides naturally into halves and quarters.

Can I put a room in the Brahmasthan?

Traditionally the centre is kept free of heavy structures, toilets, staircases, water tanks, pillars and permanent storage. In practice most Indian apartments cannot honour this, because a bathroom shaft, beam or column is already there. The usual compromise is to keep whatever sits at the centre light, clean, dry and uncluttered, avoid using it for storage, and rebalance elsewhere rather than treating it as a fatal defect.

How do I draw a Vastu grid on my floor plan?

Square off the outline of your plan into the smallest rectangle that contains it, note the length and width, divide each axis into nine equal parts (or eight), draw the lines to form the grid, then rotate the whole drawing so that true north on your compass reading points up.
