Almost every Vaastu guide assumes an independent house on its own plot. If you live in a flat, much of that advice is about things you do not own. This page separates what you can act on from what you cannot, then shows you how to run a free online Vastu check on your flat's plan.
Check My Flat's Vaastu FreeClassical Vaastu Shastra is a set of rules for building on land. It assumes you decide where the boundary runs, which corner the entrance sits in and how much open space is left north and east. A builder settled all of that before you saw the brochure.
That does not make Vaastu useless for an apartment — it means re-scoping the assessment. Interior placement stays in your hands, while the site-level rules become purchase criteria rather than corrections. And nearly every flat has imperfections: one floor plate must serve eight units, a lift core and a plumbing shaft at once. The useful question is not whether your flat is perfect, but which two or three things are worth acting on.
You cannot move it, but record which way it truly faces and anchor everything else to that.
The platform is fixed by plumbing, but the hob often shifts along the counter so the cook faces east.
Fully yours. Head south or east; head-to-north is what practitioners most often ask people to change.
A north-east shelf works, kept off any wall shared with a toilet.
Wardrobes, lofts and unpacked boxes belong south and west. The easiest correction, and free.
Mirrors on north or east walls, not facing the bed. Aquariums and filters north-east.
Leave a north or east balcony open and light; a closed-off south-west one used as a store is fine.
Keep the brahmasthan, the middle of the flat, free — no heavy sideboard parked there.
These are structural or shared, so no remedy will move them. Assess them while you are still choosing between units; once you have signed, stop agonising.
Read a compass inside the main door, looking outward. Brochure north arrows are routinely rotated to fit the page, and mirrored plans for opposite-hand units are common.
North, east and north-east are preferred. A south entry is not a disqualification; read it alongside the rest of the layout.
South-east is classical, north-west the usual second choice. Note whether it is visible from the front door.
Does a toilet back onto the kitchen or the pooja shelf? The plumbing stack makes that permanent, so check before you buy.
South-west is traditional. In many plates the largest bedroom lands north-east — a point to note, not a fault to fix.
A toilet, staircase or lift core in the middle is fixed, so it belongs in the purchase decision.
Our compass tool handles the North step, and the Vaastu grid overlay shows which zone each room of your flat falls in.
Your own front door carries more weight than the direction the tower faces. Traditions differ, so treat this as the common reading, not a verdict.
| Door faces | Generally regarded as | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| North / North-East | Most favoured for an apartment entry | Keep the foyer clear and lit |
| East | Widely considered auspicious | Do not block it with shoe cabinets |
| West | Commonly treated as neutral | Balance with lighting, clear approach |
| South / South-West | Discussed more cautiously | A threshold, good light, heavier furniture south-west |
Apartment plates are rarely rectangles. Units get L-shapes, splayed corners and clipped edges because the architect fits them around a lift core and the car park grid below. Classical texts treat a missing corner as a deficiency and flag the north-east cut hardest.
What practitioners suggest for a flat is modest and non-structural: complete the shape visually with a mirror on the wall facing the missing corner, keep that area lit and free of storage, and put a plant or a light at the cut. None of it should be sold to you as a guarantee.
Be wary of anyone who says an irregular flat needs demolition, or who prices a remedy by how worried you sound.
For directional analysis, room-by-room detail, energy flow mapping, specific remedies, prosperity zones, entrance optimisation and unlimited chat, the premium report is a one-time ₹299 in India, not a subscription (see pricing for other countries). A consultant visiting a 3-4 BHK typically charges ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 for comparable depth; online Vaastu consultation covers where a human still does more, and how it works walks through the process.
A land Vastu check is a different exercise: here the site-level rules are live decisions, not fixed conditions. What gets examined:
Vaastu AI analyses uploaded plans, so for land, upload the proposed layout drawn on the plot — a bare boundary sketch gives it little to score.
An office is read for movement and hierarchy rather than rest and cooking, so the checklist changes shape entirely:
A leased office shares the flat's constraint: core, toilets and entry are fixed, and desk placement is your leverage.
Take a compass reading at your main door, then check six things: door direction, kitchen, master bedroom, toilet positions, what occupies the centre, and where heavy storage sits. Uploading the plan to Vaastu AI scores those free.
Partly. Classical texts assume a plot you control — boundary, entrance, open space — almost none of which you own in a flat. The internal principles still apply; the rules about plot shape and boundary walls are not actionable.
North, north-east and east facing flats are traditionally preferred, largely for light and airflow. In practice your own front door weighs more than the tower, and a south or west facing flat is not a defect on its own.
Many of them, because the corrections that matter most in a flat are placement, not construction. Moving the bed, changing the cook’s facing, relocating the pooja shelf and clearing the centre are reversible and need no landlord permission.
Stand at the main door inside the flat and read the compass looking outward, away from steel doors, the fridge and electrical panels, which distort it. Take it twice and use the consistent value, not the brochure arrow.
