Which Vastu Remedies Actually Change Anything

Our check recovers 45% of a bad kitchen or toilet and 85% of a bad bedroom — set by which room it is, not by what you place in it. The full recovery table.

Short answer: in the model our check runs on, exactly two kinds of change move the number. Changing what a room is used for, and — for a wet, fire or heavy room already scoring in the avoid band — light and colour. Nothing else enters the arithmetic at all. And how much a remedy recovers is fixed by which room it is, not by which remedy you choose: a badly placed kitchen or toilet recovers 45% of its deficit, a staircase, main entrance or garage 50%, and every other room type 85%. That difference is the whole story, and it means the five anchored rooms can never be remedied past acceptable.

What the field sells, and what a floor-plan check can see

Search for Vastu remedies and you get a shopping list: copper pyramids around the door frame, mirrors to "extend" a missing corner, salt bowls in the toilet changed weekly, brass or lead strips at the threshold, yantras, wind chimes in the north-west, camphor, specific plants. Several pages promise the whole problem away in their titles — fix every defect without demolition. One puts a figure on it: around 75% or more of defects addressable without breaking a wall, with no basis given for the number.

We can be precise about our own scope instead, because our recovery figures are in the code rather than in a sales page. Our check reads your floor plan, has you confirm which way north points and what each room is, and grades every room on the zone it lands in. It cannot see an object. A pyramid, a mirror and a salt bowl are all invisible to it — not because they are ruled out, but because the only inputs are the room, its type and its zone. So when our check says a defect partly recovers, it is not crediting a purchase. It is saying: this kind of room, in this kind of wrong place, is this much a matter of use and this much a matter of plumbing.

The recovery table, in full

Every room type, its worst compass cell, the fraction our model recovers there, and where that leaves it. The recovery figure is the same for every cell in a row — it is a property of the room, not of the direction.

Read the bottom of that table and the genre's promise mostly holds: a living room, second bedroom, study or dining area in its worst possible zone comes back into the ideal band. Read the top and it fails outright. A north-east kitchen tops out at 53 and a north-east toilet at 53. No remedy in the model lifts either one out of acceptable, ever. The five rooms at the top are the ones anchored to plumbing, flue, structure and the building's shell — and they are also, by weight, the rooms that decide most of your score.

Two remedies that genuinely move the number

Changing what a room is for. The score comes from the room type crossed with its zone, so changing the type changes the input rather than dressing the output. One north-east room reads very differently depending on what it is: toilet 15, kitchen 15, staircase 20, master bedroom 25, garage 25, store 30, utility 35, second bedroom 45, dining 55, study 85, living room 95, balcony 95, pooja room 100, main entrance 100. Moving a master bedroom out of the north-east and making that room the study or the pooja space is a 60-to-75-point swing on that cell, and it costs nothing but furniture. It is also a real change — you have to actually use the room differently, not just relabel it on the plan.

Light and colour, in three rooms. This is the one object-level remedy our code carries. A toilet, kitchen or staircase scoring below 50 gets a corrective palette: the lightest scheme in the home, no dark tiles or fittings. A bedroom in the south-east below 50 gets a cooling palette to temper the fire corner. That is the complete list. The genre's advice to brighten a dark, badly placed wet room is the one item on the shopping list our model independently endorses.

Three limits worth knowing before you spend anything

No recovery is modelled at or above 70. A room already in the good or ideal band gets a recovery fraction of zero — not because remedies are forbidden there, but because the model has nothing to recover. The "energise every zone" advice has no arithmetic behind it in our check.

The ceiling is 96, not 100. The reachable score a remedied plan can reach is capped, so our check will not hand a fixed-up plan a perfect number.

Some plans have nothing fixable at home. Our model counts an avoid-band room as fixable at home only if it recovers 80% or more — which is exactly the non-anchored rooms. A 2BHK with a south-west front door, a north-east kitchen and a north-east toilet scores 52, reaches 73 with every non-structural remedy applied, and reports zero of its three faults as fixable at home. That is a buying decision, not a shopping list. If you are still choosing between flats, this is the number to compare — and it is the honest reason we do not tell you every defect is curable.

Run the free Vastu check on your floor plan and you will get the direction-wise zones and the score; the detailed report adds the room-by-room read and remedies tiered by how much each one can actually recover. If you want to see which zone a room falls in before you decide anything, the Vastu grid overlays the nine zones on your plan, and our post on a toilet in the north-east works through the hardest row in the table above.

One last scope note. Everything here grades placement only: size, ceiling height, slope, road level, what sits above or below a room and what the door opens onto are all outside the table. And every figure depends on north being right, because the zones are 45-degree sectors — at a 10-to-20-degree error, a room near a boundary crosses it.
