Which Room Should Be the Master Bedroom? The Swap Nobody Costs Out

In seven of the nine zones our table grades, a plain bedroom scores higher than a master bedroom in the same spot. Re-labelling which room is the master is free, and on a worked 2BHK it is worth nine points.

Short answer: if your master bedroom is in the north-east, the east, the north or the south-east, the cheapest fix available to you is to stop calling it the master. In the placement table our check runs on, a master bedroom in the north-east scores 25 out of 100 — the code reads that as avoid — while a plain bedroom in the same north-east room scores 45. Move the couple to the south-west room and the children or guests to the north-east one, and on a worked 2BHK the overall score goes from 82 to 91. Nothing is built, bought or painted. The rooms do not move; the labels do.

Why the label changes the number at all

Our check does not grade "a bedroom". It grades a room type sitting in a compass zone, and master_bedroom and bedroom are two different rows of the table with two different sets of numbers.

Here is the comparison, cell by cell. Higher is better; the verdict words are the ones the code itself uses (90 and above ideal, 70–89 good, 50–69 acceptable, below 50 avoid).

ZoneAs the master bedroomAs a plain bedroomWhich label wins
South-West100 — ideal75 — goodmaster, by 25
South85 — good78 — goodmaster, by 7
West80 — good82 — goodbedroom, by 2
North-West70 — good84 — goodbedroom, by 14
East50 — acceptable70 — goodbedroom, by 20
North50 — acceptable65 — acceptablebedroom, by 15
South-East35 — avoid45 — avoidbedroom, by 10
North-East25 — avoid45 — avoidbedroom, by 20
Centre30 — avoid35 — avoidbedroom, by 5

Read the last column and the rule falls out on its own: in seven of the nine zones, the room is better off as an ordinary bedroom. Only two cells in the whole row — the south and the south-west — reward the master label, and only the south-west rewards it heavily.

That is not a quirk. master_bedroom is one of the widest rows we hold, a 75-point spread from 100 in the south-west to 25 in the north-east. The bedroom row runs from 84 down to 45 — a 39-point spread, the second narrowest of the fourteen room types, behind only the dining room. A secondary bedroom is a room the table barely minds the position of. A master bedroom is a room it minds enormously.

What the swap is actually worth

Take a 2BHK with the entrance in the north, kitchen south-east, toilet north-west, living room north-east, pooja east, and two bedrooms — one in the north-east, one in the south-west. Call the north-east one the master, as plans often do when it is the larger room.

What you doScoreCost
Nothing82—
Full remedy programme on the north-east master, no swap92 (reachable)every remedy in the genre
Swap the two designations91nothing
Swap, then remedy the north-east room95 (reachable)the remedies, on a cheaper room

The honest reading is not "the swap beats the remedies". It is that re-labelling one room lands within a point of everything the remedy route can achieve, and that the two stack. A swap costs an afternoon of moving furniture, and it does not close off the other one.

Ranked by what they are worth on that plan, these are the swaps the table rewards:

  1. Master in the north-east, second bedroom in the south-west → +9. The largest swap gain the two rows allow.
  2. Master north-east, second bedroom south → +7
  3. Master east, second bedroom south-west → +7
  4. Master south-east, second bedroom south-west → +7
  5. Master north, second bedroom south-west → +7
  6. Master north-west, second bedroom south-west → +6
  7. Master north, second bedroom south → +5
  8. Master east, second bedroom south → +5
  9. Master south-east, second bedroom south → +5
  10. Master north-east, second bedroom west → +5

And the symmetry is worth stating plainly, because it is the same arithmetic running backwards: if your master is already in the south-west, swapping it out is the single most expensive thing you can do to the plan — a 9-point loss to move it to the north-east. If the south-west room is the master, leave it alone.

The part the swap does not fix

The swap moves the problem; it does not delete it. After the swap, the north-east room still holds a bedroom at 45, which the code still reads as avoid, and the plan still reports one issue, exactly as it did before. What changed is which room is carrying it.

That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth being blunt about. The master bedroom carries a weight of 0.13 in the overall score — third-heaviest of the fourteen room types, behind the main entrance at 0.18 and the kitchen at 0.16. A plain bedroom carries 0.07, a little over half as much. Put the same bad zone under the lighter label and it costs you a little over half as many points. You have not cured the north-east; you have put the cheaper room in it.

Two more things the table will not do for you here:

  • It has no opinion on who sleeps in which bed. The published advice that the head of the household takes the south-west room and children take the north or east is a rule about occupants. Our check reads room types off a floor plan. If you tell it the south-west room is the master, that is what it grades.
  • It does not model bed orientation or head direction. Those are real questions in the tradition and a large share of what bedroom pages discuss. They are not in this table, which is room type by compass zone and nothing else.

One thing to get right before you act on any of this

Everything above depends on which zone each bedroom actually falls in, and that is decided by where north is and how the grid lands on the building — not on which wall has the window. The north-east and the north are one boundary apart, and a master bedroom sitting in one scores 25 while the same room in the other scores 50. A careless bearing is enough to move it. If you want to see the zones drawn over your own plan rather than guessed at, the Vastu grid tool shows the nine-square overlay and which room lands where.

Then run the plan itself. The free Vastu check takes a floor plan image or PDF, detects the rooms, asks you to confirm north and the room labels, and returns the direction-wise zones and an overall score. The labels are the part that matters here: mark the south-west room the master and the north-east one a bedroom, and you will see both numbers this article is about. The paid report adds the room-by-room breakdown and tiered remedies on top.

And if you want the case for the south-west corner itself — why every source, ours included, converges on it — that is the subject of Master Bedroom in the South-West.

The short version

  • The table grades master_bedroom and bedroom as different rooms. In seven of nine zones the plain bedroom scores higher.
  • Only the south (85 vs 78) and the south-west (100 vs 75) reward the master label.
  • The master_bedroom row spans 75 points; the bedroom row spans 39. Where the master sits matters roughly twice as much.
  • On a worked 2BHK, swapping a north-east master with a south-west second bedroom moves the score 82 → 91, for nothing.
  • It does not remove the defect. It moves it onto a room weighted 0.07 instead of 0.13.
  • If the master is already in the south-west, the same swap costs you nine points. Do not make it.
