Kitchen Direction in Vastu: Which Corner Works, and What If Yours Is Wrong?
South-east is the classical kitchen corner, north-west the accepted second choice. Here is how the eight directions rank for a kitchen, and what you can still do when the plan puts it in the north-east.

If you only remember one thing about kitchen Vastu, remember this: the kitchen belongs in the south-east corner of the house, and the north-west is the accepted second choice. Everything else is a compromise, and the north-east is the one placement almost every school of Vastu asks you to avoid. The rest of this post explains why those rankings exist, how to find out which corner your own kitchen actually sits in, and what is realistic when the answer is not the one you wanted.
The eight directions, ranked for a kitchen
Vastu assigns each direction to an element, and the kitchen is the fire room. The south-east is the Agni corner, which is why it is the textbook answer. The north-west is governed by air, which feeds fire, so it is treated as an acceptable alternative. The north-east is the water corner, and fire in the water corner is the classic conflict.
This is how the placements rank in the convention we score floor plans against on this site, best to worst:
| Direction | Verdict |
|---|---|
| South-east | Ideal |
| North-west | Good |
| South | Acceptable |
| East | Acceptable |
| West | Acceptable |
| South-west | Weak |
| North | Weak |
| North-east | Avoid |
| Centre of the house | Avoid |
Two things are worth noticing in that table. First, there are five directions, not one, where a kitchen is at least workable. If your kitchen is in the south, east or west, you are not in trouble. Second, the gap between the top and the bottom is large. A north-east kitchen is scored far below everything else, and it is the one case where practitioners will usually say relocation is worth the cost if you are renovating anyway.
Direction means the corner of the house, not the wall you face
Most of the confusion in kitchen Vastu comes from mixing up two different questions:
- Where is the kitchen in the house? This is the placement question, and it is the one the table above answers. Divide the house into a three-by-three grid; the kitchen's zone is whichever cell most of its floor area falls in.
- Which way do you face while cooking? This is a secondary point. Facing east while cooking is the traditional preference. It matters less than placement, and it is much easier to change, because it only involves where the hob goes.
To get the placement right you need true north for your plan, and that is where most people guess. A compass reading taken on the balcony, a north arrow the architect drew, and the orientation on Google Maps are three different things and they do not always agree. Our free online Vastu compass lets you set north on your floor plan and read every room's zone off the same drawing.
What if the kitchen is in the north-east?
Be honest with yourself about what is possible. A kitchen is anchored by plumbing, a gas line and usually an exhaust, so moving it is a real renovation, not a weekend job. If you are buying or building, this is the one placement worth rejecting a plan over. If you already live there, the practical options are:
- Move the fire, not the room. The hob is the element that matters. Shift it to the south-east wall or corner within the kitchen, so the cooking point is as far from the north-east as the room allows.
- Keep the north-east corner of the kitchen light and empty. No heavy storage, no fridge, no water heater in that corner. Water elements such as the sink are traditionally better in the north-east side of the room, and the hob in the south-east side, so the two do not share a wall.
- Cook facing east. If the layout forces a choice, this is the cheapest adjustment you can make.
None of these turn a north-east kitchen into a south-east one, and we do not pretend they do. Our reports score the placement as it is, then show how much of the deficit the non-structural fixes recover. For a kitchen that recovery is modest, because the room is tied to plumbing and structure. For a bedroom or a study it is much larger.
Check your own plan in a minute
You do not need to work any of this out by hand. Upload your floor plan for a free Vastu check: it detects the rooms, asks you to confirm north, and tells you which zone every room falls in, kitchen included. If the kitchen comes back in the south-east or north-west, you can stop reading. If it comes back in the north-east, the report lists the fixes above in order of how much each one actually moves the score.
